Temporary Power Pole FAQ

  • In rare cases, Energex may not complete the 3-phase outlet connection when installing the meter. If this happens, an electrician must visit the site to test the connection and remove the warning tape on the breaker. Any additional costs incurred will be passed on to the hirer.

  • Delivery dates are scheduled as requested, but availability may vary based on stock levels and workload. Any delays will be communicated in advance.

  • Fortress Hire’s third-party provider submits an Electrical Work Request (EWR) via the Energex Web Portal on the day the pole is installed.

  • A retailer is the company that bills the hirer for both the temporary power pole connection and electricity usage.

  • Any electricity retailer can be chosen, but Origin Energy and AGL are generally the most efficient in handling temporary power pole connections.

  • Yes, Energex completes the work, but the retailer issues the bill. The current new connection fee is $527.25, covering two visits from Energex:

    • The first visit energizes the temporary power pole.

    • The second visit swings the wires to the permanent position once the job is completed.

Electricity usage is charged separately based on kWh consumption.

  • When a retailer is nominated on the pole order form, the details are sent to them alongside the Electrical Work Request.

  • Energex generally connects power within 5 to 10 business days after installation. However, delays can occur due to:

    • Traffic control requirements

    • Energex’s workload

Any delays will be communicated as soon as possible.

  • If the property is next to a yellow-highlighted road in the UBD Street Directory, Energex must assess traffic control requirements. If traffic control is needed, this can add up to 2 weeks due to council permit processing.

  • No, Energex covers all traffic control costs.

  • The pole will not be collected automatically. Please call Fortress Hire to advise when the wires have been removed so collection can be scheduled.

  • The hirer must call their electricity retailer and request a “Supply Abolishment”. This process can take up to 20 business days. An expedited request (with an extra fee) may shorten the timeline to 5 business days.

Once Energex has removed the meter and overhead wires, Fortress Hire can off-hire and collect the pole as soon as possible.

  • Yes. Fortress Hire supplies and installs underground power poles up to 1 meter from the Energex pillar.

    • Installation and wire removal from the Energex pillar is carried out under the supervision of a licensed electrical contractor, as required by Energex.

    • The cost varies depending on factors such as travel time to the site, duration of work, and mandatory safety inductions.

    • Once the contractor invoices Fortress Hire, these costs will be passed on to the hirer.

  • Yes, in some cases, the necessary paperwork can be submitted to Energex before pole installation to speed up the process.

  • If scaffolding will be within the exclusion zone, a link will be provided to request an Energex Safety Advice.

  • The installer will call before delivery with an ETA. It is recommended that someone be on-site to discuss placement. If no one is present, the installer will call from the site to discuss any issues.

A call-out fee of $110 may apply if:

    • The site is not ready despite prior confirmation.

    • There is insufficient space for the pole when the installer arrives.

  • Yes. When installed and maintained correctly, temporary power poles are safe. Fortress Hire ensures compliance with all regulations, including mandatory inspections and testing.

  • Yes, there are savings of $700 to $2,000 by avoiding Energex’s Supply Abolishment fees. Contact us for details.

  • • The hirer is responsible for the initial safety switch testing.

    • After the test sticker expires, the business that hired the equipment must ensure a competent person performs ongoing testing as per Electrical Safety Regulation 2013, Section 194 (Page 77).

Fortress Hire provides builders’ temporary power poles with a safety switch test sticker valid for approximately six months. The expiry date is noted on the sticker. After that, the hirer is responsible for ensuring future compliance and testing.
